Message from the New Principal Veronica Estrada

August 16, 2018

Dear Tennyson High School Staff,

As summer winds down, I would like to welcome you back relaxed, refreshed, and ready to continue your passionate commitment to supporting our scholars as each embarks on their path to success! This particular summer has brought many changes to both my personal and professional life. At the beginning of July, I was appointed as the new principal for Tennyson High. I can assure you that I accepted this position with the intention of continuing to build stronger relationships with our staff, scholars, and community.  I believe we can continue working together to establish systems and create, as well as implement, a shared vision where we shift Tennyson into an institution of learning students are eager to attend.

The 2018-19 school year will bring more positive changes to our community.  Ms. Aimee Malcolm will embark upon her new role as the World House Administrator and Ms. Taslin Kimball will be joining the administrative team. Both of these administrators want support staff and utilize everyone’s expertise in order to meet and exceed our vision. We will work with Local Curriculum Council to ensure this goal is achieved through developing a rich and relevant professional development plan that fosters collaboration, increased student academic engagement, and deeper learning. We are also asking teachers to participate in committees that will increase everyone's leadership roles and support the school with building the systems and procedures Tennyson needs to function optimally as a site.

There are some updates and celebrations I would like to share:

We have been awarded the NMSI (National Math and Science Initiative) AP Grant, which provides professional development for teachers, additional study resources for students, and purchases instructional materials for AP Math, Science, and English classes.

Hayward Promise Neighborhood (HPN) will be partnering with us to provide our school and our community educational services to our scholars and families for the next couple of years. This partnership was created to ensure educational success for our scholars and to create a safe, healthy, thriving community for ALL who live in Hayward. HPN is comprised of residents, selective schools in HUSD, colleges, government agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations.  HPN will provide tutorial services during the school day and after school, Coordination of Services Team (COST) Coordinator, Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Coordinator, and ELL Specialist. HPN will also be essential in supporting the efforts in building a bridge between Tennyson and Chavez Middle School.

Additionally, we are also welcoming new staff members to our Tennyson family.  I eagerly await introducing them to our esteemed returning colleagues when we meet at 8:15 am on Wednesday, August 22nd in F15. I encourage you to support and offer them any help you can provide. We will be hosting an orientation for our new teachers on Friday, August 24, 10:15-10:45.

Thank you all for your commitment to Tennyson High School and welcome back!
