Hayward, CA—Tennyson High School’s football program is enjoying major success as they sit atop the Western Alameda County Conference’s Shoreline Division in sole possession of first place with a 7-1 record.

Star running back Ja’Kobe Harris was recognized by SportStars Magazine earlier this month as the Football SportStar of the Week for his “prolific” season to date. He was also highlighted as the Inspirational Athlete for the week in September by the 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Report for excelling on the field and in the classroom despite overcoming personal hardships. He hopes to major in animal science after graduation.

Senior Quincy Bass was named Player of the Week in early September, also by the 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Report. Being at Tennyson is really good for me because I like the bond that we have,” said Quincy of his experience on the team. “I think this school can take me places in the future if I continue to work hard.”

    Coaching recognition

The team’s head coach, Terry Smith, has received additional accolades for leading the team to its most successful start since 2014. In September, he was named the Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week by the San Francisco 49ers. As a result of this award, the Tennyson football program received $1,000 from the the 49ers Foundation. Coach Smith will be invited to a 49ers practice where he will receive the award from 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Representatives from the Oakland Raiders visited the team during their practice on October 10 to award Coach Terry Smith the Tom Flores High School Coach of the Week Award. That recognition also comes with a $1,000 donation to the school’s football program.

The Tennyson Lancers are playing on a brand new field for the first time this season as the Hayward Unified School District completed new athletic facilities at all three of its traditional high schools earlier this year. Last year, they played all of their games on the road while construction was completed on the Tennyson campus. The team is taking their success in stride. In September, Harris had an epic run that received national attention after the play was highlighted on a Fox Sports highlight reel.
